We were in for some good weather, and had a lack of inspiration. So we went to the Greek harbour city of Thessaloniki. It hasn’t got a reputation as a beautiful city, but some sunshine would be enough compensation. We stayed in an Airbnb place near the central square.
Cars everywhere
After arrival we tried to find a spot to sit in the sun and have lunch. There was a small problem. There were cars everywhere. Making a lot of noise and spoiling the scenery. Even near the waterfront.
Electra Palace Hotel
After diner we usually went to Electra Palace Hotel, which has a skybar overlooking the main Aristotelous square. At least we could escape from the cars below. Expensive place, but good for a beer.
Aristotelous Square
This is the main square on the waterfront in Thessaloniki. In the weekend children were playing around, along with homeless people.
The country and the city have their fair share of economic problems. Angry graffiti all over the place. I believe this one is against shops being open on sunday.
Dinner in Greece
First evening we had dinner in Dia Xoiros. The best restaurant according to Tripadvisor. We made a reservation, but the place was mostly empty. Was okay restaurant.
The best dinner we had was in the Kitchen Bar. It was located on a small peninsula, on the waterfront. But this time without the noise of cars.
The most expensive restaurant, 7 Thalasses, was nothing short of terrible. Don’t go there. They served us overpriced fish and chips.
Monuments
The city consists of endless blocks of big ugly buildings. There is one small tower, called the White Tower. We didn’t even bother to visit it. Not impressive.
By accident we found a bar with a terrace overlooking the city – and not as usual next to a big road.
On the waterfront we hired a kind of electric wheelchairs. We explored the waterfront, and even hit the road.
We wouldn’t know why anyone would visit this city. It’s noisy and ugly, and hasn’t got much to offer.
